Pool Pump Repair (2026): Fix a Leak, Air Leak, or Dead Motor

Accessories

Most pool pump repairs are one of three things: a worn O-ring set, a shaft seal that let water into the motor, or a motor that has finally quit. Find the leak first, then buy the rebuild kit that matches your pump family.

A pool pump is a simple machine in a wet place. Water gets past a rubber part, the rubber part gets old, and the pump starts dripping or pulling air. Very few of those repairs need a new pump. Most need one box of seals and an hour with a wrench. For the most common case, a Hayward Super Pump with a drip at the housing, the Southeastern Kit 3 is the rebuild box that finishes the job in one order.

This guide sits with the rest of the pad equipment in the pool accessories guides, next to the best pool pump guide for buyers and the pool pump motor guide for a motor that is already gone. Use this page when the pump still turns but the water will not stay where it belongs.

Find the leak before you buy parts

The wet spot tells you which part failed, and that decides which kit you order.

Two checks are worth doing before you spend anything. First, dry the pump and run it for a few minutes so the water has to show itself. Second, note the pump family and the model number on the housing. Hayward Super Pump, Pentair WhisperFlo, and Pentair SuperFlo all use different gasket sets, and a kit for one will not seal another.

Rebuild kit for a Hayward Super Pump

The Southeastern Hayward Super Pump Kit 3 is the rebuild box for the SP1600 and SP2600 family, including the X and VSP versions. It covers the housing gasket, the diffuser O-ring, the lid gasket, and the pump shaft seal.

Check your model first. The Super Pump kits do not fit Super Pump II or MaxFlo pumps, and those two look close enough in a photo to fool you at the parts counter.

Buy it if you have a Super Pump with a dry, uncracked housing and a drip you can see. Skip it if the housing is cracked around a bolt hole, because a new gasket will not close a split in the plastic.

Rebuild kit for a Pentair WhisperFlo or IntelliFlo

The Pokin PS-1000 kit is the full rebuild set for a WhisperFlo or IntelliFlo built on or after 2-1-2008. You get the black seal plate gasket, both drain plug O-rings, the impeller gasket, the lid O-ring, the diffuser O-ring, the water slinger, the PS-1000 shaft seal, and a tube of O-ring lube.

The build-date split is real. Pentair changed the seal plate in early 2008, and the earlier pumps take a different seal. If the date is stamped and it reads before 2-1-2008, stop and order the right kit rather than forcing this one.

Buy it if you have a post-2008 WhisperFlo or IntelliFlo and a drip you have already located. Skip it if the motor is humming without turning, because that is a motor or capacitor problem, not a seal problem.

Rebuild kit for a Pentair SuperFlo or SuperMax

The Pokin PS-200 kit is built for Pentair SuperFlo and SuperMax pumps. Along with the usual seals it includes two pump union O-rings, two drain plug O-rings, a water slinger, the US Seal PS-200 shaft seal, and O-ring lube.

That makes it a good shelf spare. If your pump has ever been apart for a motor or an impeller, the union rings are already older than you think.

Buy it if you run a SuperFlo or SuperMax and want the union rings in the same box. Skip it if your pump is a WhisperFlo or IntelliFlo, because the seal plate hardware is different.

If the wet end is healthy and the motor is fine, a rebuild kit restores the pump for a small fraction of a replacement, and your plumbing stays untouched. If the housing is done, a kit is money spent on a pump that will not hold water anyway.

Reassemble without pinching a gasket

Order matters more than force.

  1. Shut off the breaker, close the valves, and let the pump drain.
  2. Clean every groove with a rag. Grit under a new O-ring is a leak waiting to happen.
  3. Fit new O-rings dry or with a light film of O-ring lube, never with grease.
  4. Set the seal plate gasket flat and keep it there while the motor goes back on.
  5. Tighten in an alternating pattern in small steps, and stop when the housing seats.
  6. Prime the pump before the first start, and never run it dry.

Two habits save the next repair. Keep the pump basket clean so the impeller is not eating grit, and check the lid O-ring at the start of each season. A two-dollar ring is the cheapest insurance on the pad.

When to call a pro

Reach for a phone instead of a wrench in three cases. If the pump cannot come out without cutting plumbing, a seal job turns into a plumbing project. If the wiring is not clearly labeled, or the circuit is not a GFCI-protected pool circuit, that is electrical work, not pool work. And if the breaker trips when the pump starts, stop and have it checked rather than resetting it a third time.

Bonding and grounding keep swimmers safe. They are not optional steps, and guessing at them is a bad trade for an afternoon of your time.

Bottom line

Find the leak, then match the kit to the pump family. For a Hayward Super Pump, the Southeastern Kit 3 covers the whole reseal. For a WhisperFlo or IntelliFlo built after February 2008, the Pokin PS-1000 kit is the full set. For a SuperFlo or SuperMax, the Pokin PS-200 kit adds the union rings that stop the leak people miss. Clean the grooves, keep the seal faces dry, and tighten evenly.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I find where a pool pump is leaking?

Dry the pump with a towel, run it for a few minutes, and watch. Water under the strainer lid is a lid O-ring or a cracked lid. Water between the motor and the housing points at the seal plate gasket or the shaft seal. Water at the bottom plug is a drain plug O-ring. A drip from the back of the motor means the shaft seal has already failed.

Is a pump leak worth repairing?

Usually yes. A gasket and seal kit costs a fraction of a new pump, and the repair is an afternoon job if the plastic housing is intact. Replace the pump instead if the housing is cracked, the impeller is chewed up, or the motor is burned out and the wet end is old.

Why is my pump running with air in the strainer basket?

Air on the suction side, not a leak on the pressure side. Check the lid O-ring, the union O-rings, the drain plug, and the skimmer line for a partial blockage. A lid O-ring that is dry or flattened is the most common cause, and it costs a few dollars to replace.

Do I need to replace the shaft seal every time the motor comes off?

Yes. The seal is normally the part that failed and let water reach the front bearing. Reusing an old seal on a new motor is the fastest way to ruin it. Buy the seal as part of the kit so it is on the bench when the motor is off.

Can I lubricate the shaft seal to make it slide on?

Not the polished faces. Wipe the ceramic face and the spring seal face with a soft cloth and press them together dry. A little silicone sealant goes on the metal portion that presses into the seal plate, and O-ring lube goes on the rubber O-rings, never on the lapped faces.

How tight should the housing bolts be?

Snug and even. Tighten them in an alternating pattern in small steps until the housing seats, and stop there. Over-tightening cracks old plastic housings, which turns a seal job into a new pump.

When should I call a pool tech instead?

Call one if the pump will not come out without cutting plumbing, if the wiring is not clearly labeled, or if the breaker trips when the pump starts. Bonding and grounding are safety items, and a burned motor usually needs a new motor rather than a seal.

Can I repair a pump with the pool still full?

Yes. Close the suction and return valves, or plug the lines, before you open the pump. Work above the water line and keep the pump basket clear so a restart does not run dry.
